happened in the moments leading up to those crashes. the crashes happened just 5 miles apart. we have more on the bayview district crash but begin with christie smith. you were actually the first crew on the scene. >> reporter: yeah. we were. the passengers say they felt the bus driver slam on the brakes, then there was a sudden and loud crash. that people fell from their seats. but in the beginning they didn't really know what caused it. the impact of the crash was clear on the front of the muni bus. a 38 l on geary loaded down with passengers. >> i was halfway back on the left side. all of a sudden, wham! and a big collision of some kind. and people were all over the place. i went down too, i held onto the bar, the seat, maybe, that was there, and i went around it and went down, halfway down. >> reporter: 20 people injured. 12 of them transported to the

hospital, the injuries considered non-life threatening. >> it felt like slow motion, but it was, i mean, it, i honestly didn't really start feeling the pain till afterwards because the adrenaline. >> reporter: some of the injured were given ice packs on scene while investigators took statements from the drivers. >> about 1:30 this afternoon there was a muni coach and dump truck headed westbound on geary. and we don't know what created the or caused the accident at this point. it's still under investigation, but the muni coach rear ended the dump truck. >> reporter: police say it appears the dump truck may have slammed on its brakes in front of the bus. the bus then put on its brakes to avoid the truck but then hit a second truck. the drivers were uninjured but it was a different story for the

passengers. >> i'm okay. a little painful. >> reporter: the driver was tested for drugs and alcohol, which is standard after an accident like this. they'll also be turning over video from that bus to police to help in the investigation. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, nbc bay area news. the other crash in the bayview district at third and inez. here's a look from our helicopter that was over the intersection where a muni and big rig collided. are they close to clearing the scene? >> reporter: they are. crews acted fast. the big rig and train are gone. the tracks are okay and service here is back in action. it's been restored in both directions here on third street. it is a quick recovery after a chaotic emergency situation on muni this afternoon. muni says there were about 40 people on the train when a big rig made an illegal left turn in front of it. muni says the experienced train

driver saw the truck and tried his best to stop, hitting the emergency brake and cutting power to the light rail vehicle in case of fire, but the truck hit the train. witnesses say the impact sounded like an explosion, and people were hurt. >> someone was crying very much, a lot of people was crying. some were just hurt. >> reporter: san francisco police say there were 20 people injured. 11 people were taken to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries, and nine people were assessed at the scene. the truck driver stayed at the scene for some time talking to investigators. he did not appear to be injured. the rig says it's a title transportation services inc. truck. there is a no left hand, no u-turn sign here. the truck did make an illegal turn with a big impact, sending people to the hospital with

injure y but, again, service ha been restored. >> the last muni accident with this many injuries happened in 2009. 46 were hurt when one train slammed into another at the west portal station. investigators concluded that the operator of one of those trains lost consciousness and blacked out. >> we'll bring you updates on air and online on nbcbayarea.com. let's take you outside to sunol. the hills are dry. the east bay dealing with triple digit temperatures again today. >> one of the hottest days of the year. jodi hernandez is helping you stay cool, but we begin with jeff ranieri. it can be dangerous. >> most certainly. over the past 35 minutes, it has evolved. our temperatures have gotten hotter. antioch coming in with 107

degrees. pleasanton now at 106. bout both of these tied for the hottest days of 2014. danville hills also 101. now the thing that we have going for us right now, a shred of relief is the cooling onshore winds now beginning to make it back across the east bay. yes, it is still warm to hot. but numbers are down from the daytime highs. 95 in walnut creek. 78 in sunnyvale. 90 in santa teresa. we'll talk more about a hot weekend coming with this blocking ridge of high pressure and how long this trend is going to be lasting. >> let's turn things over to jodi hernandez. you've been in antioch all day, and it's hot out there. when it's this hot, it's about staying cool, hydrated and comfortable.

>> reporter: it's very hard to stay comfortable in hot weather like this. antioch hit a whopping 107 today. and the fact that many of the city's water features are bone dry certainly doesn't seem to be helping the situation. emergency responders say when it gets this hot your health is on the line. >> oh, yeah. >> reporter: clint campbell's making sure he drinks plenty of water as he heads out for an afternoon hike in the triple digit heat. the man has had heat exhaustion before. >> you get the headache, the nausea. you stop sweating because your body basically doesn't have any more water in your body. you get really dizzy, and you can't really walk. >> reporter: contra costa firefighters say when this get this is hot they worry, not just about fire danger but heat-related health problems. >> it's potentially fatal, actually, if you let it go too

fa far, you don't get enough hydration, you can't get enough water or cool off fast enough, it is a life or death emergency. >> reporter: these seniors were staying cool at a cooling center. >> from bay point it gets hot. we deal with hot weather out here. >> reporter: this 79-year-old joyce milner has a heart condition. she says the hot weather makes her feel sick >> hard to breathe. saps the energy out of you. >> reporter: campbell says he knows it's hot, but he's not going to let it stop him. he'll just take precautions >> that's why i came prepared with about five bottles of water, nice, cold bottles of water. i have my hat on, and i try to stay in the shade as much as i can. >> reporter: this is the key to getting through the hot weather emergency responders say drink until you're not thirsty, and

then drink some more. very important to stay hydrated. and we've been doing plenty of that today. reporting live in antioch, jodi hernand hernandez, nbc bay area news. >> good vice, thanks, jodi. the count down is on. we are less than 24 hours from the big test of the newest athletic facility. we're talking about levi's stadium. >> but are they ready? there's a flurry of last-minute activity under way. if you're going to take mass transit, what do you need to know in advance? >> reporter: some very important steps to help fans can't be put into place until the last minute. so it is a hectic time. but for many people here they say they are ready. the 49ers say they'll be working right down to the start of the san jose earthquakes game tomorrow, jobs large and small. >> security, parking, making sure janitorial services is on point in terms of having the

building fresh and clean for ebb when they enter it. >> reporter: in the next 24 hours, the 49ers will set up digital signs all around the area. >> so we can adopt and change, manipulate traffic. >> reporter: season ticket holders we talked to are getting familiar with the designated parking lots and routes after last week's dry run. >> we've seen some of the issues with traffic we've had. we're going to try light rail to see what public transit is like. >> reporter: they will accommodate thousands of extra riders. >> we are telling fans to get there early because at our mountain view and great america stations they will not be able to access the ticket machines. >> reporter: it will be hectic and a learning experience. all the agencies we talked to say they plan a lot of post-game analysis. live in santa clara, robert honda, nbc bay area news.

dramatic surveillance video. police say this armed robbery took place at a san jose chevron station near interstate 280. if the man in the video looks familiar, please call san jose police. if you were thinking of bringing to santa cruz to escape the heat, bring a nose plug. it's still stinky. dead fish and workers are struggling to cheap thlean them. >> reporter: it's worse now than it was an hour ago. these fish are rotting and rising to the surface which of course is a problem for these boat owners who are worried about protecting the bottle of their boats. the longer the fish are in there the worse it gets. sea lions in the santa drucruz harbor are living the dream. >> you can taste it too.

>> reporter: dead anchovies cover the surface of the water. >> it's too bad. >> reporter: this 83-year-old is helping out, trying to clear the water near her sailboat. >> to see all these little fish upturned with their white bellies up, it's very, very sad. >> reporter: on wednesday night, a massive school of anchovies swam into the harbor. there were so many with so little oxygen in the water they suffocated and died. >> could be a hundred, could be a million. we just don't know yet. >> reporter: there are definitely more than a hundred. after filling up all the trash cans in the area, crews were called in to suck up the fish and haul them to a landfill. but many of them are still on the harbor floor. >> once you pull it in, you quickly pull it so none of the fish fall out. >> reporter: carson gonzalez and his buddy have been at this all morning. the boaters appreciate the

effort. >> it eats into your fiber glass. and when that happens the boat starts to leaking. >> reporter: when the fish start decomposing it creates slime in the water that you can actually see and definitely smell. the boat owners say they have to wait until these fish are cleaned out of the water before they can clean up their boats. and the cleanup efforts continue throughout the weekend of the and the harbormaster is asking for volunteers tomorrow and sunday. i'm michelle roberts, nbc bay area news. new details now on the elderly driver who plowed into a busy sidewalk restaurant. the 90-year-old man now has an urgent appointment with the dmv. the elderly driver is not expected to face charges in this crash, but they are notifying him to take an emergency re-test to keep his driver's license. he has five days to comply. six people are recovering from injuries in that crash. the driver accidently hit the gas instead of the brake while trying to parallel park.

getting an early start today did not pay off for passengers at the airport. just as boarding was about to begin, an alarm went off and they couldn't override it manually. it took several minutes to develop a work around. it caused several delays. an angry protest kept several employees from getting to work on town. two tech buses were blocked this morning. they represented seniors and disabled, who say they've been evicted by landlords who can charge more. a man visiting relatives is accused of groping and harassing two women, one on the university campus. he is accused of touching and harassing women on two occasions, one on july 11 when

he aggressively touched and kissed a woman. 11 days later a woman on the stanford campus reported a man forcefully grabbed her and tried to kiss her. we're moving one step closer to a movable median on the golden gate bridge. they will shut down some lanes to prep for next year's installation. they will start on the northbound lane to the north end of the bridge. there have been calls for new safety measures following several head-on collisions there. so crews will be removing the yellow plastic tubes that you normally see separating north and southbound track. those will be replaced by a steel and concrete barrier. firefighters are gaining ground on that fire near yosemite, enough to allow some people to get back into their houses. that wildfire has bushed more than 6 square miles. it's now 58% contained. but there's a grove of giant

sequoias that are threatened if the fire tushes north. crews have already dug fire lines. they're widening those as a precaution. the weather's not helping the situation. we've got dangerous heat. let's get a check on the microclimate forecast. low humidity. and the hottest temperature coming in with antioch at 107 degrees. that gets it close to the hottest day they've had for the year. but tying in pleasanton at 106. yes, it gets hot in the tri valley, but the average is just 89 degrees. thank goodness for the san francisco ocean breeze. if we didn't have the fog at the coastline and the westerly wind we wouldn't see this kind of relief at the bay. 78, mainly sunny skies. fogged in on our downtown san

francisco sky camera. and possibly some drizzle there tonight. if you are heading to san francisco, drastically different conditions hiding your way. for the tri valley, humidity at 11%, 94 degrees, uncomfortably hot. and for the south bay, a lot more comfortable. currently 77 and sunny skies. as we take you into the first part of the weekend, it's not much, for the tri valley, instead of 106, we're going to go down to an even 100. it's going to be very, very hot outside. drink plenty of water and stay hydrated. for parts of the north bay, averaging 90. and for the south bay, closer to averages with an expected 88 degrees. if you are looking for something to do this weekend, the sonoma wine train. this is a good one. maybe do a little wine tasting and hop on a train. temperatures in the mid-90s. maybe it's 17 mile drive.

wall street endured another down day. concern over overseas economies outweighed optimism that u.s. interest rates will stay where they are. the dow ended up losing 69

points, the s&p fell more than 2.5% for the week. ebay claims it's doing something better than other tech firms. 42% of its employees are women. but when it comes to diversity, ebay's numbers are similar to other tech giants. 85% are white or asian. 7% black, and 5% hispanic. they credit their initiative a few years ago for the women. one of the google barges moved to the port of stockton last month. the mountain view company says it's an interactive space that can be used to show off google gadgets. today we're learning the fate of another floating barge. an international barging company bought that one, and the deputy

two muni accidents five miles apart. in japan town, a muni bus collides with a dump truck and minutes later, a big rig turns into the path of a train. those two accidents created tremendous difficulties for emergency responders. they didn't realize there were two separate accidents. christie smith is near the intersection of geary in japan town. that thoroughfare is now reopened? >> reporter: yeah. that's right. it did open maybe two hours after the accident, but when we first arrived, passengers were actually being treated right across the street there by paramedics. they say that the bus driver

suddenly hit the brakes. there was a huge crash, but they didn't initially know what was the reason behind it. this was the 38-l bus that they were riding, outbound. it collided with a dump truck. this was near laguna at about 1:30 this afternoon. the impact so hard that the front end of the bus was smashed in and part of the windshield lying on the ground. the dump truck slammed on its brakes in front of the bus. the bus slammed on its brakes to avoid that truck and hit a send truck. 12 people transported to the hospital. all were passengers on the bus and considered non-life threatening injuries. the lane was closed for about two hours. the drivers were unharmed. the spokesperson for muni says the driver is undergoing drug and alcohol tests.

reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, nbc bay area news. our nbc helicopter captured the other muni crash, this one in the bayview district. a semi truck made an illegal left in the path of an oncoming muni train. that scene's also clear now, right? >> reporter: that's right. muni acted fast. service has been restored here on third street. you can see the train and big rig are gone. muni says the tracks are safe, even after that train was derailed. it's a quick recovery after an emergency situation this afternoon. muni says there were about 40 people on the tk train when a big rig made an illegal left turn in front of it. muni says the experienced train driver saw the truck and tried to stop, hitting the emergency brake and cutting power to the light rail vehicle in case of fire, but the truck hit the train. witnesses say the yes, ma'am pant sounded like an explosion and people were hurt. one of the injured passengers

actionable intelligence. emery's university is bracing for the arrival of the two americans with the deadly ebola virus. each is a health care worker who contracted it while in after chasm the p -- africa. >> we have developed a unit which can safely care for a patient with a serious communicable disease. >> the centers for disease control is now launching an effort to assist with the crisis in west africa. 50 experts will soon be going to the region to track down victims and anyone who's been in contact with them. both hamas and israel are blaming each other for renewing attacks less than three hours after what was declared to be a three-day cease-fire. people tried to salvage belongings before the bombing started again.

jose finally plugged after you saw it here. crews showed up to fix the leak on show shoshone circle. a woman called on july 11 to report the leak. we were told it would likely be another weak. they're bogged down dealing with the 150-year old infrastructure, but today they fixed it. crews are continuing to clean up the damage from the water main break on sunset boulevard. they are removing cars from that parking garage. city officials say the broken pipe is expected to be fixed late tonight or early saturday. nbc bay area's committed to helping projects like 21st

century solutions. tonight we show you a program called the rise program helping a special demographic in our community. damian trujillo shows us. >> then the next body paragraph are what are your most important take aways from the class. >> reporter: it's essay righting team in this summer class, part of the rise program. >> boom, your paragraph got long. >> reporter: these are students who might need special attention, perhaps a nudge or two. they all come from foster homes. mooney gives them that nudge and makes a few uncommon accommodations. for instance, he allows them to listen to music or text during class. it was a compromise. >> i was fighting it the first few weeks. so i made a deal with them. when i'm talking or when we're having group discussions, all electronics off. when they're working independently, i give them the

choice. >> he has the highest expectations for these stewed th -- students. he does it in a very personalized way. >> reporter: dr. david lopez is board member of the silicon valley children's fund. the rise program gives foster children the support they need to keep them from falling through the cracks. it's one of the reasons the program received a $25,000 grant from nbc universal's 21st century solutions. >> i completely see myself in there. i always wanted it, so i made the choices to be there. but it was always the support that was needed. and i think here they have that. >> reporter: niklas jackson jumped around from foster home to foster home. she says the rise helped her graduate magna cum laude.

>> it was a challenge, not because i couldn't do the work or that the work was hard, but because my mind was elsewhere. he was always worried about what was going on at home. >> reporter: there were more than 1200 children in foster care last year in santa clara county. traditional schools are failing many of those children he says and thinks the rise program helps fill that void. >> those students that are in there unfortunately have been challenged in a traditional setting, but they've come here, and there's something very positive happening. >> we are a group of humans that have been together for six weeks. >> reporter: it's happening in mr. mooney's class with children he believes are going to make it. damian trujillo, nbc bay area news. >> all made possible by 21st century solutions, a group providing grants. the program gives $50,000 grants to non-profits that come up with new and innovative ideas. if you want to apply, go to our website and look for the 21st

century solutions link. if you thought it was hot outside, you're right. we tied for a record for the year. >> dangerously hot across parts of the bay area. this now makes our ninth day at 90 degrees or hotter. pleasanton hit 106 today. we also had 107 at apartmentioc. san ramon at 100. and we had the cooling westerly wind for parts of the bay. 94 in san jose, palo alto, 88, oakland 79 and a little chill in the air in san francisco with 68 degrees. the wind at the coastline is pushing the cool pacific air right in the bay. north bay, 76 right now, real nice evening coming our way. winds out of the west at 12 in san francisco. that may also help to produce

some drizzle tonight with stronger wind. humidity increasing through the peninsula with the fog moving in. and for the south bay, a beautiful night, sunset expected at 8:1567. air quality was poor today, but it looks like it's going to improve a little bit for tomorrow. we'll also gradually see the heat story improve just a little bit as we head towards sunday's forecast. we'll see that in the seven-day forecast that scrolls across the bottom of the screen. the problem is this huge ridge of high pressure. there's nothing signaling this thing getting out of here in the next four to five days. what we're going to see happen, though, with the lower levels is the fact that we're going to get fog rolling in repeatedly for saturday, sunday, and monday. that's going to shave some temperatures down here as we head throughout that weekend forecast. let's go ahead and take you into

the microclimate forecast. san jose, instead of the 9 0s, we mainly should be in the upper 80s. look how hot it's going to be again, in morgan hill. 98 degrees as we heard from jodi hernandez, want to make sure to drink plenty of water and take a lot of brakes. head to the coastline, check it out, and you go to palo alto, much different story with 83. san francisco staying in the 60s throughout tomorrow. so if you want to head there, might not be a bad weekend if you live in the tri valley, east bay hills, head on over to sf, do a little shopping or sightseeing. it will be more comfortable. napa expecting sunny skies. you know what's a good thing to do, head to san francisco, hop on the ferryboat to sausalito. and you get real beautiful there

with 70 degrees. wat nut creek expecting 99. livermore expecting 100. so for this weekend, again, tomorrow, we see numbers go down just slightly from today's highs. you can see here across the tri valley we're still arming right around 100. then by sunday's forecast, 94 degrees. in the south bay, if you are thinking about something to do this weekend, you do want to be aware of the fact that levi's stadium is going to be opening on saturday. they've got the sounders and earthquakes. temperatures in the mid-70s with sun and clouds. traffic could be a nightmare. want to watch out for that one. otherwise, real beautiful weekend coming your way. thanks, jeff. the giants may have seen the last of matt cain this season. details on his injury coming up next in sports.
